Taking Charge of Change

An online activist training course for young workers who want to lead, build, and organize for change.
Taking Charge of Change (TCC) is an intensive six-week activist training program for young workers andyouth activists (age 30 and under) who want to lead, build and organize for change. This program takes place in a participatory online learning environment.
This program will help you:
  • Build leadership skills to engage and mobilize young workers.
  • Build knowledge about the issues affecting young workers in the union, workplace and community.
  • Deepen your understanding of past and present labour and social justice issues using an anti-oppression framework.
  • Develop organizing skills for building a movement.
  • Bonus! Build solidarity with other young activists across the country!

Understand the issues, build the skills

TCC builds on basic union education to deepen your analysis of the issues affecting you as a young worker. We’ll examine the challenges facing young people in the context of the workplace, across the country and around the world.
We begin by developing our understanding of what brings us together as young workers, exploring our differences and recognizing how each of us can take charge of change in our own communities. Sessions explore contemporary issues grounded in a context of peoples’ histories, struggles and politics. We round out the sessions by building skills and sharing strategies and tactics for organizing.
Topics include people’s history, inequality, human rights, climate justice, political campaigns, radical organizing, social movement building, inter-generational communication and more.

Program details

TCC is an intensive program made up of 12 sessions held live online over six weeks. Each session is a combination of presentations by guest speakers and facilitated discussion. Guest speakers will be young workers who are experienced organizers in their field.
We’re using a “flipped” webinar workshop structure. Prior to each session, participants will receive diverse content – an article, a video, an interview – to read or watch prior to the webinar. This enables greater analysis and depth of conversation to take place in the webinar itself.
  • The program runs September 16 to October 23, 2014, with two sessions per week on each Tuesday and Thursday.
  • There are a total of 12 sessions and you’re asked to attend at least 9. Four sessions are mandatory, and 5 are elective. This should allow you some flexibility for family obligations, religious observances, or other union activities.
  • Sessions run in the evening from 7pm to 9pm EST.
  • Due to the digital nature of this course, young workers from all regions across Canada are welcome to apply.
  • Since this is a pilot program, there is no registration fee to participate, but you must have  reliable access to high-speed Internet and a phone line.
  • This program is offered in English.

Feedback

As this is a pilot, we will be asking all participants to provide feedback throughout the program, as well as at the end.

Application Process

Applications are open from June 9, 2014 to July 9, 2014.
The Canadian Labour Congress encourages members of equity-seeking groups to self-identify. Women, people of colour, workers with disabilities, LGBTQ workers, and aboriginal workers are encouraged to apply for this program.
The selection process for this pilot session will be a cooperative joint process between the Canadian Labour Congress and our affiliated unions.
